LSU's Miles set to announce staff changes
New LSU co-defensive coordinators Doug Mallory and Bradley Dale Peveto along with new special teams coach Joe Robinson are expected to be introduced at a news conference today by head coach Les Miles, LSU sports information director Michael Bonnette said Sunday.
"That's the plan," Bonnette said. "But I have not been able to get in touch with coach to finalize everything."
Miles has been on vacation.
The moves have been widely reported by various media, including The Times, for weeks.
Mallory has been LSU's secondary coach since 2005 when he joined Miles at LSU from Oklahoma State. Bo Pelini, who left LSU's defensive coordinator post after the Tigers won the national championship on Jan. 7 for the Nebraska head coaching job, highly recommended Mallory as his successor to Miles. Mallory was a senior defensive back at Michigan in 1987 when Miles was an assistant coach there. Miles and Mallory both are Ohio natives. Mallory was the defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky in the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
Peveto, a Beaumont, Texas, native, has been LSU's special teams coordinator and linebackers coach since 2005 after leaving the defensive coordinator post at Middle Tennessee, where he was in 2003 and 2004. He was also defensive coordinator at Northwestern State from 1996-98.
Robinson, a 1985 LSU graduate from Abilene, Texas, has been the special teams coordinator at Arizona for the last four seasons. He did not return a call to his room at the Lod Cook hotel on the LSU campus Sunday night.
Robinson, 45, interviewed for the LSU position on Jan. 17, according to Charles Barbre, a Baton Rouge television talk show host who has a contact with Robinson.
Robinson also was the special teams coordinator at Central Florida in 2003 and at Houston in 2002. He was the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisiana Tech in 2001. From 1992 through 1998, he coached the defensive line, linebackers, special teams and was recruiting coordinator at various times.
The well-traveled coach is extremely happy to be back in Louisiana, according to Catholic High of Baton Rouge coach Dale Weiner. Weiner hired Robinson to his first job in 1986 at Catholic High of Pointe Coupee in New Roads when Weiner was the head coach there. Robinson replaced Weiner as Catholic Pointe Coupee's head coach in 1987 when Weiner went to Catholic of Baton Rouge. Robinson then became defensive coordinator at Bastrop High in 1988 before landing a graduate assistant spot at Louisiana Tech in 1989. In 1990 and 1991, he was the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Tech.
"He was some excited to be coming back home," Weiner said. "I talked to him about a week ago when he let me know he got the job."
Robinson's wife Abby is from Bogalusa.
"I think he is an excellent hire for LSU," Weiner said. "He's a special teams specialist and he's been a recruiting coordinator. From what I understand, the recruiting part was a critical part of the hire."
PERRILLOUX STATUS: Miles may also shed some light today on the status of quarterback Ryan Perrilloux. Larry Dauterive, who was Perrilloux's coach at East St. John High, said he had heard Perrilloux missed a team meeting recently but was unsure of the player's status with Miles.
